Maybe I'm Crazy...

...but I am starting to think about cloth diapers. (I pause for your gasps) No, I am not kidding. Keep in mind the key phrase "starting to think about" here. I've never considered it before. Not for 2 seconds. I'm not exactly the green girl poster child, nor desire to be, but I can't help but think about this beautiful earth that we are all filling with trash at a ridiculous rate, and how I contribute.

I can't begin to count the number of diapers I've gone through with Easton. How much money we've spent buying them and how much landfill space it is occupying. And he doesn't seem to be in too much of a hurry to stop using them. As an added bonus I am thinking of little man #2 that will arrive all too soon and the cycle will repeat.

Anyway, cloth diapers have come a long long way. I found this brand, bumGenius, and they have velcro so they work the way I'm accustomed to. They also have a brilliant design that will fit babies from 7-35 pounds. Buy one size and you're done.(unless you have a little bit of a baby, but that smallness doesn't last long anyway) All the reviews say that if you wash according to instructions (an extra cycle) they come out clean and smelling good. I even like that I can hang dry them, and you know how I love to hang my clothes and loathe the dryer! Or I could dry them.

I was thinking, c'mon, I wipe this kid's bottom and am already immersed in poo a couple times a day, so what's the big deal of emptying it into the toilet and then washing later? Really, we do that anyway to help Easton see and learn that that's where it goes and he's not scared of it, for potty training purposes of course.

And I'm all about saving some cash for much more fun things. Oh, like gas and food and pedicures, of course.

If you have any relevant experience or knowledge I'm interested in hearing it. Times a ticking and I think I should decided before baby comes...

I've never considered cloth diapers, but those actually look like they might work decent.

I've heard good things from people out here that use them.

Good for you for wanting to be more eco-friendly! Some things I would consider -
That's ALOT of laundry!!
You'll be using ALOT more water, which isn't eco-friendly either or great on the utility budget.
What about diaper rash?
I worked with cloth diapers when I worked in a Nursing Home, granted adults are significantly larger than babies, but I HATED them!! Nothing and nobody stayed dry- EVER.

Buy a few and try them out on Easton and see how it works out - maybe they really are as wonderful as the ad claims! Personally, I'd want to know someone who actually uses them and loves it.

I'm so negative, huh?

Hi, I'm Stephen's sister in law and I just had to comment because I used cloth diapers. I actually prefer the prefolds with pins so the baby can't take them off but most people do seem to like all-in-ones. I currently don't have a washing machine but once we get one again I am switching back to cloth - It really does save alot of money!

SAY WHAT???? Never, ever has the thought entered my mind. God put man on earth to create and invent things for the betterment of mankind. Clothe diapers were not part of that equation. YIKES! But I do understand your reasoning and whatever you decide just remember this; If you use clothe diapers, don't expect me to watch him. JUST KIDDING! Love ya-Tara

Do you have to have the plastic pants with those diapers? I had to store dirty diapers in a pail and then wash a load later. It was a real pain. I wish disposables were more eco friendly. I'm not a big help am I? But then I'm old.
