Not only do I cringe at the thought of getting into a swimsuit in the dead of winter, but I don't have one. (That fits) My lovely friend, Elise, told me a while ago about Land's End. Did you know that they have a program online that lets you input your measurements, and then you get to virtually try on swimsuits (or clothes)? It's been very helpful seeing a realistic picture of what it'll look like, rather than the over-perfect swimsuit model. Try it. Just pick an item and then click on the "try it on" link.
It's brilliant. I mention this now because not only is this good for trying things on when I don't dare do it at the store, but it's really good incentive for solidifying that New Years Resolution.

Ok sorry I deleted my other comment I found a link for you. It was on Rachel Ray that I heard some great advise for getting a good swimsuit that fits right and makes you look tight :) (I rhymed that by myself) ha ha.
anyways it says that lycra is the best material to look for and that if you treat your swimsuit right it will treat you right.
